The Generosity of Strangers: The Way a Man I Had Just Met Assisted Me Secure the Position That Transformed My Existence

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to the European continent with a companion. Because my companion was considering pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had arranged a two-week stay there en route to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a big multi-story edifice on the UWS named International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and started talking to fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been performing experiments with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the university – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I ought to seek a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that night. The Iraqi student walked over to me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but immediately explained to my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his name, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in so many ways. I lacked the bravery or nerve to approach someone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

Critically, that job in New York led me to a role in Europe where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
