An defense minister has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the potential security risks posed by Chinese vehicles, while staff have been instructed to refrain from talking about secret matters in any vehicles.
Security Advice for MoD Personnel
In a recent appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about classified information while riding in Chinese vehicles.
The minister said that the ministry is “looking into” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that security is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.
We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret level in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing threats of surveillance that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about safety.
After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, Pollard replied: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”
Wider Defence Context
This announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow China to disable buses and bring disruption to public transit.
Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing lasers at RAF pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
This broader security situation highlights the significance of strong protocols and caution in every aspects of official activities, including transport usage to communication habits.
