Tuesday brought inhabitants of the world's most polluted city encountered breathing dangerously toxic air that fell into the "severe" category.
Several parts of Delhi showed an AQI above 500, which translates to 10x the healthy level set by the World Health Organization.
Particular areas, levels of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1,800, equating to fifteen to twenty times higher than healthy standards.
For the past four years, the government had maintained a complete ban on the sale and use of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the dangerous pollution that engulfs the capital as winter sets in.
Yet earlier this year, the current local administration petitioned the highest court to seek a relaxation of the ban.
They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically questioned by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "heritage and ecological concerns".
Much to the frustration of environmental and health activists, judicial authorities complied with the proposal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during designated periods throughout the festival.
On Monday night, there was widespread violation of the regulated periods across the capital, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly type.
Several monitoring devices throughout Delhi showed air quality spiking around midnight to some of the worst readings seen during Diwali in at least the past three years.
The widespread use of firecrackers during the festival also initiated a controversy with adjacent the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab partly blaming declining atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on pollutants originating in across the border following the events.
Alarmingly severe levels of atmospheric toxins in the capital have persisted as a major problem for fifteen-plus years, with the situation showing no improvement.
Around the festival period, the levels of hazardous airborne contaminants in the environment has been found to spike to 70% higher the worst readings ever documented in Beijing, which was once regarded as the world's most polluted urban center.
This crisis in the city is attributed to a convergence of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, construction activities, waste incineration and smoke from crop residue ignition in neighbouring regions of Punjab and Haryana.
Within these states, farmers routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, producing hazardous smog that remains stagnant over the capital as winter air arrives.
Both financial and medical consequences on the nearly 33 million people living in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to multiple investigations.
The contaminated air causes high levels of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung disorders, and can result in malignancies.
Environmental contamination is projected to be responsible for approximately 10k early mortalities each year in Delhi.
